The Old Dairy Factory

Hands up anyone with a good suggestion for the old Kaipara Co-op Dairy Factory building, now up for sale.

It's a prime spot, right smack bang on the town's Southern entrance (although admittedly right on the rail line and much of it down in a bit of a hole).

Just let me just get my tongue firmly in my cheek ... maybe it could be the site for the new World Cup stadium - after all, it is right on the rail line, which seems to be a major consideration for the Government (despite the fact no-one seems to use the trains...) It's even waterfront, if not in quite such a glamorous way as downtown Auckland ;-)

It would be a shame to see the building re-used as a factory, considering it's location.

My wife is all for knocking it down and creating a park on the site - quite a nice idea, I thought, though I can just see the council falling over itself to fork out money for something like that!

Most of the building is pretty much just an ugly old eyesore, although the main entrance part is sort of art deco-ish, with its curved walls and glass blocks. Perhaps that bit could be retained and used as the basis for something a bit more attractive.

There was talk a few years back of creating an arts centre in the building, and I still think that's a good idea considering the wealth of artistic talent in the area (see my previous post). Those sorts of things often work quite well, with artists practising their crafts in a rabbit-warren sort of old building.

Whether there's enough of a market to keep something like that running full time in Helensville is a bit doubtful though; it would probably work well as a weekend-only affair, but the setup costs probably make that financially unviable.

So, what else? Come on locals - put your thinking caps on, and get your wallets out!

Comments:
some of the inside walls are completely lined with tiles & quite nice, good for milk powder production appearently..but the asbestos through the buildings may be a problem though?..and an even bigger problem if buildings become victims of arson..and lets not get started about them being on an old pa site.

A motel and conference centre. Some appartments with some landscaping to complement the riverside walkway.
The concrete buildings at the east end of the complex should be retained to house some facilities such as a pool, fitness centre, arts/crafts.

The Warehouse!

Leave it as it is!

NO No No not the warehouse we don't need anymore of those stores there are enough of them littering the land....no warehouse...plez

It would be a shame to see it demolished - it's a reminder of times gone by. Although I know it's not overly attractive to look at, it's part of Helensville's history. What about turning it into a haunted attraction similar to the type of thing that has been set up at the old Kingseat hospital in Karaka....

well appearently its near to being sold and demolished by ward demolition and turned into apartments & shops...shame..thats why the owners 'kaipara investments' has let it get run down,so new buyer has reason & rights to demolish..not sure what will happen to asbestos risk in this case?..when interested buyers have been shown through buildings, they weren't told anything about it,even though others were warned to stay out of certain areas within the buildings because of the risk!!..mr benjamin knows the story!.shame on you brother.

I am a student at Kaipara college and am interested in using the old factory (Dairy Co-Op) as the setting for a brief Media studies film. If anyone knows how i might contact the owners of the factory please contact me at
kaipara.movie.team@gmail.com
thank you very much.

why can't the old factory be used as a place of history the old place is as old as helensville its self . alot of good men and woman from helensville worked there . or make into something nice any way would be say to see it get pulled down .

The Kaipara Dairy Company is an important piece of industrial architecture. Sadly the last time I passed through my former and still much loved town some ratbag vandals had smashed up the entrance to the 1950's part of the factory. It's been through the closure back in the 1980's then Martech's attempts at the fruit juice factory. Renovate it for goodness sakes turn it into something everyone can be proud of. An arts centre is a great idea and maybe some other uses too. I remember the days when people would call Helensville a hole and couldn't understand why I had chosen to live there. I know why I chose it because it's unique and special and still is. Preserve the towns history - don't destroy it.

I'm a local and I'm very proud to call Helensville home.My whanau and I moved here from Wellington in late 70s 80s and I remember the old milk factory. Now I think its a eye saw set up a place for the young single parents to meet or solo parents programme think about the tamariki of today.

Jan 09 !! Passing by chance, spotted the old factory and stopped for a quick photo shoot.

These lovely old industrial buildings were built solid and would make a brilliant community resource for the arts.. the natural light in some of the buildings is awesome.

I really hope Helensville comes good with this place.. good luck

Dan from Waikato (to see the pics google Tirau Dan Kaipara) Cheers

If you care about helensville so much go halfs in buying it, make it into an oldschool theatre then go halfs in the profit! helensville is living in the past which dont get me wronge its great its my home. The old dairy company building would have to be part of a makeover of the somewhat tired main street. North of Wellington is the town of Otaki, similar in size to Helensville. A number of well known clothing, footwear and other companies have opened outlet shops there and are doing well. Perhaps Helensville could try something similar. Demolition of the the old dairy building would quickly be regretted.

If anyone knows how I can get into contact with the owner, I can find use for the building. If someone can email me at ferretman_66@hotmail.com

Saw a great idea for the old dairy factory today on the website inhabitat.com. Check it out : "6 awesome parks made from rehabilitated urban structures " What a cool idea.....
